How can we access the deep inner knowing that already lives within us?
In my experience, the first step is calming — or perhaps more accurately, quieting — the mind and its constant stream of thoughts, plans, opinions, and judgments. This doesn’t mean shutting the mind off, especially because shutting it off is so difficult, but rather shifting our attention toward the signals and sensations of the body.
This is both essential and challenging. Our minds are deeply conditioned to act as our protectors. They constantly scan for potential danger, drawing on past experiences to try to prevent anything bad from happening. Like a loyal but overprotective guardian, the mind resists anything unfamiliar — and especially anything uncertain. As a result, we end up repeating the same patterns. Not because they serve us, but because they are so familiar that they feel safer than the unknown.
The mind pulls from what it already knows — memories, assumptions, old fears — keeping us in loops that can be hard to break. Changes are threats rather than possibilities.
Shifting our attention to the body helps loosen the grip of this mental overactivity. Being more present in the body allows us to experience life directly, to encounter newness instead of avoiding it — and to feel more alive in the process.
One practice I’ve found helpful is to build a new relationship with our inner protector. Try to ask the mind, gently: “What are you trying to protect me from right now?” And while you ask, stay connected to your body. Notice the breath. Feel the air enter your body and the torso gently expand. Feel it leave again on the exhale.
This can bring to light old fears or childhood experiences where you had no choice but to stay quiet. Say ’no‘ was not an option.
By recognising these patterns, we create more space to respond — not just react. This awareness also helps to create more space to reconnect to your reactions. These reactions are information that help to contact a deeper part of you. And in that space, your intuition has room to emerge.
If this speaks to you, I warmly invite you to join one of my upcoming workshops before the summer. These workshop are designed to help you quiet the mind, reconnect with your body, and awaken your intuitive intelligence:
